The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has released a list of 39 tertiary institutions it says have yet to refund students who paid their tuition fees before receiving disbursements from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, NELFUND.

NANS President, Akinteye Babatunde, disclosed this in a statement on X on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, saying the affected institutions had already received tuition payments from NELFUND on behalf of eligible students but had allegedly failed to refund those who had earlier paid their fees.

According to him, the publication of the list was aimed at promoting transparency, accountability and ensuring that affected students receive their refunds without further delay.

“The following institutions have received NELFUND tuition payments on behalf of eligible students but are yet to refund students who had already paid their tuition fees before the NELFUND disbursement,” he said.

“This list is intended to promote transparency, accountability and to ensure that affected students receive the refunds due to them without further delay.”

NANS urged the listed institutions to expedite the refund process, warning that students who paid their tuition before NELFUND disbursements should not be made to bear unnecessary financial burdens.

The development comes amid growing concerns over double tuition payments under the Federal Government’s student loan scheme.

NELFUND had earlier said some institutions received tuition payments from students before also receiving loan disbursements on behalf of the same students, creating a refund obligation.

The Fund said while some institutions had processed refunds quickly, others had delayed, prompting petitions from affected students and investigations involving relevant stakeholders.

The institutions listed by NANS are:

NANS said the publication of the list was necessary to compel prompt compliance and protect students from unnecessary financial hardship.

The students’ body maintained that institutions that had received NELFUND tuition payments on behalf of eligible students must refund those who had already paid from personal or family funds before the loan disbursements were made.

The issue has generated concerns among students and parents, especially as many affected students reportedly borrowed money or relied on family support to pay school fees before their loan applications were processed.

NANS said affected students should not be left to suffer delays after government-backed tuition payments had already been made to their institutions.
