Says Caretaker Committee Is Not a Solution

NBA Gwagwalada Branch Says Manifesto Was Violently Disrupted on June 5, Branch Chairman Clever Owhor Assaulted, Publicity Equipment Seized, Names Godday Owobu (Atiku) as Leader of Group That Stopped the Process, Says Electoral Exercise Being Rescheduled Under Supervision of NBA 3rd Vice President

The NBA Gwagwalada Branch has issued a press release accusing certain individuals of violently disrupting the branch manifesto organised by the Electoral Committee (ELCOM) on Friday, June 5, 2026, stating that the Branch Chairman, Mr Clever N. Owhor, was physically assaulted, the branch’s publicity amplifying systems were seized, and the manifesto was disrupted “in a thug-like and unprofessional fashion,” leading to the postponement of the electoral process.

In a statement signed by the branch’s Publicity Secretary, High Chief Dauda Ajadosu, and dated June 8, 2026, the branch named Godday Owobu (also known as Atiku) as the leader of a team allied with one N.D. Abdulsalam that allegedly stopped the manifesto and assaulted the branch chairman, attaching video clips and photographs that it said captured the events at the manifesto venue.

The branch said the individuals responsible for the disruption had since “flooded the public space with conflicting narratives designed to mislead members and curry sympathy from the national leadership of the Association,” prompting the press release to “set the record straight.”

The branch stated that the electoral process, including manifestos and voting, is being rescheduled for later in the week under the supervision of the 3rd Vice President of the NBA, Hajia Zainab Aminu Garba, and the Chairman of the Advisory Committee of the NBA Gwagwalada Branch, Prof. Mrs Josephine A.A. Agbonika, SAN, who also serves as the “Mother of the Branch.”

The branch commended what it described as the “prompt and principled intervention” of the NBA national leadership under President Mazi Afam Josiah Osigwe, SAN, and other stakeholders who “prioritised peace, due process, and the rule of law in resolving the impasse.”

The Gwagwalada Branch stated that the violent disruption of the manifesto was not an isolated incident but the latest in a sustained campaign by certain individuals who lost the branch election two years ago and have since “consistently positioned themselves in opposition.”

The branch accused these individuals of employing a range of tactics including propaganda and blackmail, impersonation of members at the Monthly General Meeting (MGM) “even before some new wigs were called to the bar so as to meet up with the attendance for voting purposes only,” the monetisation of the electoral process, the importation of non-lawyers into branch meetings, the recruitment of external forces, and openly advocating for the imposition of a caretaker committee “as early as six months into the current administration.”

“It is particularly disturbing that these same individuals have, through orchestrated blogging and manipulative storytelling, continued to feed the public and the national leadership with misinformation intended to distort facts and gain undue influence,” the branch stated.

The press release addressed allegations that the branch executive tampered with or padded the voters list, stating categorically that the ELCOM compiled the list “strictly on the basis of verified and true Membership, payment of BPF, Branch Dues, and Meeting Attendance post registration, in full compliance with the NBA Constitution and the Branch Bye-Laws.”

The branch said the list was “compiled through due process, verified, and displayed for scrutiny.”

“It is most unfortunate that in all their writings, blog posts, and public statements, these individuals have failed to prove or substantiate even one concrete instance of how the Executive padded or tampered with the voters list. Their claims remain speculative and bereft of evidence. We challenge them to produce verifiable proof rather than continue to peddle unsubstantiated narratives and inciting concoctions,” the statement read.

The branch addressed calls by the rival group for the imposition of a caretaker committee, describing the demand as a “desperate tactic” by those who have failed to win the confidence of the majority through legitimate means.

“Caretaker Committee is not a solution, it is an invitation to chaos and an affront to the democratic will of the members of this Branch. We must resist such divisive overtures,” the branch stated.

However, the branch added a pointed caveat: “If that is the last resort, we shall all leave to enjoy the attendant gains,” suggesting that if a caretaker committee were imposed despite the branch’s objections, the consequences would be borne by all parties.

The branch stated that it was attaching video clips and photographs from the manifesto venue as evidence of the violence and disruption. The videos reportedly show how Godday Owobu (Atiku) and a team allied with N.D. Abdulsalam allegedly stopped the manifesto and assaulted the branch chairman.

“Let the attached videos and pictures serve as a mirror to the truth. We urge every well-meaning member to watch them, reflect, and stand firmly against any attempt to sow discord or undermine our collective progress,” the branch stated.

The branch stated that the outgoing executive had “exercised considerable restraint in the face of sustained efforts by certain persons to undermine our democratic processes,” and reiterated its commitment to transparency, due process, and the ideals of the legal profession.

“The NBA Gwagwalada Branch will continue to uphold transparency, due process, and the noble ideals of our profession,” the statement concluded.

The press release was signed by High Chief Dauda Ajadosu, Publicity Secretary, NBA Gwagwalada Branch, and dated June 8, 2026.

Neither Godday Owobu, N.D. Abdulsalam, nor any representative of the group accused of disrupting the manifesto has publicly responded to the branch’s press release as at the time of this report. The rescheduled manifesto and voting are expected to take place later this week.
