The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Police Monitoring Unit (PMU) to investigate a petition seeking a probe into allegations against two senior police officers over the alleged killing of a missing activist and blogger, Abubakar Idris, popularly known as Dadiyata.

The directive was contained in an official acknowledgment letter issued by the Office of the Inspector-General of Police at the Force Headquarters, Louis Edet House, Abuja, dated May 8, 2026.

The letter, referenced CZ:7050/IGP.SEC/ABJ/VOL.201/18, was addressed to the law firm of A.A. Hikima & Co., based in Kano State.

Signed by the Principal Staff Officer to the Inspector-General of Police, CP Lateef Adio Ahmed, the letter confirmed receipt of the petition demanding “an immediate, independent and transparent investigation” into allegations against CSP Hussaini Gimba and CSP Hassan Gimba.

“I write to inform you that the Inspector-General of Police has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Police Monitoring Unit, to attend to your request,” the letter stated.

The development followed a petition written by Kano-based lawyer, Abba A. Hikima, who urged police authorities to investigate allegations reportedly made by Muhammad Musa Kamarawa, a former Senior Special Assistant to ex-Zamfara State Governor, Bello Matawalle.

In the petition, Kamarawa was quoted as alleging that the two officers threatened to kill him “as they killed Dadiyata and Saminu S/Fada Gusau amongst others in my presence at Operations Yaki Kaduna.”

Hikima argued that the allegations were too serious to be ignored, particularly given the unresolved disappearance of Dadiyata since August 2019.

Dadiyata, a lecturer and outspoken social media commentator, was abducted from his residence in Kaduna State by unidentified persons, and his whereabouts have remained unknown for nearly seven years.

The case has continued to generate widespread public concern, with civil society organisations, activists, and human rights groups repeatedly calling for a thorough investigation into his disappearance since August 2019.

In his petition to the IGP, Hikima’s independent officers’ investigation would either clear the accused officers’ names if the allegations are false or ensure justice if found to be true.

The latest response from the police hierarchy is seen as the first official indication that the allegations may now be subjected to formal scrutiny by the Nigeria Police Force.

However, the police authorities did not disclose a timeline for the investigation or whether the officers named in the petition would be questioned.
