Senate Minority Whip, Senator Tony Nwoye, has defected from the African Democratic Congress, ADC, to the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC.

Nwoye, who represents Anambra South Senatorial District, announced his resignation from the ADC in a letter read during plenary on Wednesday by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.

In the letter, the lawmaker said his decision to leave the ADC was informed by internal divisions and multiple litigations pending before the Federal High Court.

He said the court cases and judgments affecting the party had undermined its formation, cohesion and stability.

“I write to formally notify you of my resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and my intention to defect to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC),” Nwoye stated.

“The decision has become necessary due to internal divisions and the ongoing multiple litigations at the Federal High Court and court judgments affecting the party, which unfortunately affected the creation and stability of the party,” he added.

After reading the letter, Akpabio directed the Clerk to the Senate to update the Senate records accordingly.

The Senate President also wished Nwoye well in his new party.

Nwoye’s defection comes amid a growing wave of exits from the ADC to the NDC in the National Assembly.

On Tuesday, several federal lawmakers, including members of the House of Representatives and a senator, also left the ADC for the NDC.

The development follows recent political realignments involving prominent opposition figures, including Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, who have also moved to the NDC.
