The Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Gwagwalada Branch, has released the final list of cleared candidates for the forthcoming June 2026 Branch election.

The list was contained in a statement jointly issued by the Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Sir Luke Enelichi, and the Secretary, Mrs. Magdalena Laya Nankwat, following the conclusion of the screening exercise.

According to the Committee, the screening process was rigorous, thorough, and conducted in line with the provisions of the NBA Constitution and applicable electoral guidelines.

At the end of the exercise, Hassan Luqman Olayiwola, Esq., was cleared to contest for the office of Chairman, while Irene Ominike Odibaba was cleared for the office of Vice Chairman.

The Committee, however, disclosed that some aspirants were disqualified over discrepancies discovered in their nomination documents.

One of those disqualified was Mr. Nuraddin Daud Abdulsalam, a former aspirant for the office of Chairman.

According to the Committee, Abdulsalam was disqualified over inconsistencies relating to his 2025 Bar Practice Fee, BPF, receipts.

It said two separate receipts were presented, bearing conflicting details on the payee branch, with one indicating Abuja Branch and the other Gwagwalada Branch.

The Committee said that, in view of the inconsistency, neither receipt could be relied upon as valid proof of membership compliance with the NBA Gwagwalada Branch.

Following his disqualification, Abdulsalam and some of his supporters were said to have expressed strong objections to the Committee’s decision.

There were also reports of statements suggesting that the election could be disrupted unless his candidacy is reinstated.

Some claims, which have not been independently verified, also suggested possible attempts to escalate the matter to the national leadership of the Association.

However, sources within the Branch, who spoke anonymously, said the Electoral Committee remains firm in its resolve to uphold due process, transparency, and the rule of law in the conduct of the election.

Further information available to the Committee also suggested that Abdulsalam does not have a record of formal registration as a member of the NBA Gwagwalada Branch.

The Electoral Committee has reaffirmed its readiness to conduct a free, fair, and credible election in June 2026.

It also urged all members of the Branch to remain calm, law-abiding, and committed to the democratic ideals of the Association.
