A Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association Lagos Branch, Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, has called on legal practitioners to move beyond rhetoric and embrace deliberate, value-driven leadership in Nigeria.

Akangbe made the call while speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2026 Law Week of the NBA Bwari Branch, themed “The Leadership Challenge in Nigeria: The Way Forward, Beyond Rhetoric.”

In his address, he stressed that the theme reflects the urgent need for practical solutions to Nigeria’s leadership challenges, both within the legal profession and across national institutions.

He noted that lawyers, as custodians of justice, play a critical role in nation-building and must uphold the rule of law while promoting integrity, competence, and accountability in public life.

According to him, effective leadership remains central to strengthening institutions and ensuring that standards are maintained across board.

“Getting leadership right is fundamental. When we do so, we strengthen our ability to demand accountability, uphold standards, and contribute meaningfully to the progress of both the Bar and the nation,” he said.

Akangbe further urged members of the Bar to be intentional in their decisions, particularly as the association approaches a crucial period in its development.

He emphasised that the future of the NBA depends on the values its members uphold and the leadership choices they make.

The event drew legal practitioners and stakeholders from across the country to deliberate on pathways for improving leadership and institutional effectiveness in Nigeria.
