The Nigerian Law Society has reiterated its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s tax system and legal framework, as it delivered a goodwill message at the National Conference on the New Tax Framework in Nigeria held in Abuja.

The conference, which took place on April 28, 2026, in Garki, Abuja, brought together stakeholders from academia, tax practice, policymaking, civil society, and the legal profession to deliberate on the implementation and impact of the country’s new tax regime.

Speaking on behalf of the President of the Nigerian Law Society, Mela Audu Nunghe, SAN, the body expressed appreciation for the invitation, describing its participation as both a privilege and a responsibility in shaping national tax discourse.

The Society highlighted its core mandate of promoting continuing legal education, advancing democratic reforms, and strengthening institutional frameworks, noting that taxation remains central to these objectives.

It referenced the recent overhaul of Nigeria’s tax laws, including the Nigeria Tax Act, Nigeria Tax Administration Act, Nigeria Revenue Service Act, and the Joint Revenue Board Act, which were assented to on June 26, 2025, and came into full effect on January 1, 2026. According to the Society, the reforms have streamlined previously fragmented tax laws, introduced uniform administrative procedures, and established the Nigeria Revenue Service as the central tax authority.

The NLS outlined three guiding principles underpinning its approach to the new tax framework: clarity in interpreting tax laws, coordination among stakeholders, and compliance through capacity building. It emphasised the need for sustained dialogue and professional training to ensure effective implementation of the reforms.

The Society also acknowledged the conference hosts, including Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, El-Amin University, New Gate University, the Nigerian Bar Association Minna Branch, and the Metropolitan Law Firm, commending their roles in advancing discussions on fiscal policy and legal development.

While noting its status as an emerging professional body, the NLS acknowledged challenges such as visibility, resource constraints, and institutional growth, but reaffirmed its commitment to supporting legal practitioners and promoting a transparent and accountable justice system.

The Society further stressed the urgency of adapting to the evolving tax landscape, particularly the integration of digital compliance systems and harmonised procedures, adding that it is developing training platforms to equip young lawyers with the skills required to navigate the new framework.

It concluded by urging stakeholders to recognise the law as a vital bridge between policy and the people, pledging the Society’s continued support through technical input, professional development, and constructive engagement.

The NLS also wished participants a productive conference, reaffirming its dedication to contributing to national development and global best practices in legal and tax administration.
