The President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Afam Osigwe, SAN, has called on young lawyers across Nigeria to embrace purposeful and value-driven leadership as a critical foundation for the future of the legal profession.

Osigwe made the call on April 23, 2026, while delivering an address at the National Summit of the Nigerian Bar Association Young Lawyers’ Forum, held to commemorate the Forum’s 20th anniversary.

The summit brought together young legal practitioners from across the country, providing a platform to reflect on two decades of the Forum’s contributions to mentorship, professional development, and the advancement of young lawyers within the Bar.

Speaking on the theme, “Rising to Lead,” the NBA President commended the leadership and members of the Young Lawyers’ Forum for sustaining what he described as a dynamic and impactful platform dedicated to nurturing the next generation of legal professionals.

He emphasised that leadership within the legal profession must be intentional, competence-driven, and rooted in integrity, noting that the future of the Bar depends significantly on the preparedness, ethical standards, and continuous development of young practitioners.

Osigwe urged young lawyers to view leadership not merely as a position to be attained, but as a responsibility to be earned through discipline, consistency, and a genuine commitment to service.

Addressing the evolving nature of legal practice, he highlighted the importance of resilience, adaptability, and innovation, stressing that these qualities are essential for navigating technological advancements and shifting socio-economic realities.

He further encouraged members of the Young Lawyers’ Forum to take advantage of opportunities for capacity building, mentorship, and professional exposure, while remaining steadfast in upholding the rule of law.

The NBA President concluded by urging young lawyers to rise above limitations and position themselves as future leaders of both the Bar and the nation.

He also reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigerian Bar Association to continue supporting the growth and empowerment of the Young Lawyers’ Forum as a vital pillar in strengthening the legal profession in Nigeria.
