Prince Peter Bassey, President of a governance and accountability advocacy group, has expressed strong confidence in the leadership of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, describing him as competent, transparent, credible, and highly principled in the discharge of his constitutional duties.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, Bassey said Amupitan has demonstrated exceptional leadership since assuming office on October 23, 2025, stressing that his tenure has been guided by strict adherence to the Constitution, the Electoral Act, and international best practices.

He said the INEC Chairman has consistently maintained that the integrity of the electoral process must remain “absolute and above reproach,” adding that his leadership has strengthened public confidence in the Commission.

Bassey highlighted several achievements attributed to the Commission under Amupitan’s leadership, including the early release of the timetable for the 2027 general elections on February 13, 2026, aimed at ensuring adequate preparation by political parties and stakeholders.

He also cited the successful conduct of the Anambra State governorship election on November 8, 2025, shortly after Amupitan assumed office, as well as the smooth coordination of the Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections held on February 21, 2026.

According to him, the Commission is also making proactive preparations for the Ekiti and Osun governorship elections scheduled for June 20 and August 8, 2026, with early security and logistics arrangements already underway.

He further noted INEC’s announcement of plans to commence a nationwide voter revalidation exercise to update the voters’ register ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing it as a step toward inclusivity and electoral integrity.

Bassey also commended the Commission’s continued engagement with stakeholders, including political parties, security agencies, civil society organisations, and the media, through regular consultative meetings aimed at promoting transparency and accountability.

Addressing recent allegations circulating online regarding the INEC Chairman’s alleged ownership of a social media account, Bassey dismissed the claims as false and misleading, insisting that investigations showed no evidence linking Amupitan to any such account.

He described the allegations as a deliberate attempt to distort facts and mislead the public, urging security agencies to take swift action against the spread of misinformation and cyber-related falsehoods.

The group also called on Nigerians to disregard claims questioning the integrity of the INEC Chairman, including remarks attributed to a former minister, which it described as unfounded and politically motivated.

Bassey urged all political actors and stakeholders to allow ongoing court cases involving INEC to proceed without interference, stressing the need to protect democratic institutions.

He concluded by reaffirming confidence in the leadership of Professor Amupitan, describing INEC under his watch as “competent and trustworthy,” and capable of delivering credible elections in the 2027 electoral cycle and beyond.

He also called on Nigerians to support the Commission and its leadership as it works to strengthen democracy in the country.
