The Nigerian Law Society has congratulated His Royal Majesty Albert Akpomudje SAN on his appointment as Chairman of the Body of Benchers, describing the elevation as a well-deserved recognition of his exemplary career at the Bar, his unwavering commitment to the advancement of the legal profession, and his enduring contributions to jurisprudence and the administration of justice in Nigeria.

In a congratulatory letter dated April 9, 2026, and signed by NLS President Chief Mela Audu Nunghe SAN, Bencher, and National Publicity Secretary Dr. Lilian Uche, the Society expressed confidence that the Body of Benchers would continue to uphold the highest standards of legal ethics, discipline, and professional responsibility under Akpomudje’s leadership.

The NLS described Akpomudje’s emergence as reflecting not only his professional excellence but also the confidence reposed in his leadership by the legal community at large.

“This distinguished elevation is a testament to Your Royal Majesty’s exemplary career at the Bar, your unwavering commitment to the advancement of the legal profession, and your enduring contributions to the development of jurisprudence and the administration of justice in Nigeria,” the NLS stated.

The Society expressed its belief that Akpomudje’s chairmanship would further strengthen the integrity and dignity of the legal profession in Nigeria — a particularly significant expectation at a time when the profession faces multiple challenges, including tensions between the Bench and the Bar, concerns about professional discipline, and questions about the independence of the judiciary.

The NLS prayed for divine guidance for the new chairman, asking that “the Almighty God grants Your Royal Majesty the wisdom, strength, and good health required to discharge the onerous responsibilities of this exalted office with distinction and lasting impact.”

The Body of Benchers is one of the most important institutions in Nigeria’s legal profession. Established under the Legal Practitioners Act, it is responsible for the formal call to the Nigerian Bar of persons seeking to practise as barristers and solicitors, the regulation of professional conduct, and the conferment of the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria — the highest professional distinction available to legal practitioners in the country.

The chairmanship of the Body of Benchers is one of the most prestigious positions in the Nigerian legal profession, historically held by the most senior and distinguished members of the Bar and the Bench. The chairman presides over call-to-bar ceremonies, SAN conferment events, and other significant occasions in the professional life of the legal community.

His Royal Majesty Albert Akpomudje SAN brings to the position a distinguished career spanning decades of legal practice, service to the profession, and contributions to the administration of justice. His dual status as a traditional ruler and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria reflects a unique combination of traditional leadership and professional distinction.

His appointment comes at a time when the legal profession is navigating significant challenges — from the NBA’s ongoing electoral crisis to tensions between judges and lawyers over courtroom conduct, and from questions about the independence of judicial institutions to the broader role of the legal profession in safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy.

The Nigerian Law Society, led by President Chief Mela Audu Nunghe SAN who is himself a Bencher, is one of the professional associations representing lawyers in Nigeria. Its congratulatory message reflects the broader legal community’s recognition of Akpomudje’s appointment and its expectations for his tenure as chairman.
