The Lagos State Government has commenced a full investigation into the reported death of a popular Lagos socialite and influencer known as Elena Jessica, also called Leenah Doll, who allegedly died following complications from a Brazilian Butt Lift cosmetic procedure at a clinic in the state.

Elena, whose story has triggered widespread outrage and intense online debate about the safety of cosmetic surgery in Nigeria, reportedly passed away on March 8, 2026, weeks after undergoing a second, revision BBL surgery at Cynosure Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Hospital in Ikoyi, Lagos.

According to reports and accounts shared by her family, Elena underwent the procedure on February 6, 2026. Two days later, she allegedly began experiencing severe pain, fever and swelling. Her condition deteriorated in the following weeks until her death on March 8.

Her sister, identified as Nelli, took to TikTok to allege that the hospital failed to take responsibility for Elena’s deteriorating condition and claimed that unsterilized tools may have been used during the procedure, leading to a fatal infection. A video allegedly showing the aftermath of the surgery, including severe swelling and tissue damage, went viral on social media, sparking intense backlash against the clinic and reigniting national conversations about the risks of cosmetic procedures.

Cynosure Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Hospital has disputed the allegations of negligence, stating that it adheres to standard medical protocols. In a statement, the clinic claimed to have recorded zero patient deaths this year.

However, the hospital has faced previous criticism regarding patient safety. In 2022, the clinic was linked to the death of influencer Christabel Gabriel, raising further questions about its track record.

The probe is being conducted by the Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency, the statutory body responsible for monitoring, licensing and accrediting healthcare facilities in Lagos State.

In a statement issued on Thursday, HEFAMAA Permanent Secretary Abiola Idowu said the government had initiated a thorough, professional and transparent investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Idowu disclosed that preliminary findings indicate the clinic where the procedure reportedly took place is registered with HEFAMAA but stressed that registration does not preclude any facility from regulatory scrutiny, particularly when incidents involving patient safety are reported.

The agency said it had commenced a comprehensive review covering verification of the professional credentials of the medical personnel involved, an assessment of compliance with regulatory standards, and an evaluation of the level of care provided to the patient before, during and after the procedure.

HEFAMAA noted that aesthetic and cosmetic surgical procedures in Lagos are governed by clearly defined regulatory standards. These include requirements relating to facility infrastructure, practitioner qualifications, infection prevention and control protocols, patient consent procedures, anaesthetic safety and emergency response capacity.

The agency urged the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified or speculative information that could compromise the integrity of the ongoing investigation.

It also advised residents seeking cosmetic or aesthetic procedures to exercise due diligence and ensure that such services are obtained only from accredited health facilities and qualified medical practitioners with the requisite training and competence.

Elena’s death has reignited fierce debate about the culture of buttock enhancement procedures in Nigeria and the adequacy of regulation governing cosmetic clinics. A Brazilian Butt Lift involves transferring fat from other areas of the body to the buttocks to achieve a rounder and fuller shape. It is considered one of the riskiest cosmetic surgeries globally, with mortality rates sometimes estimated at one in every 3,000 procedures, often due to fat embolisms.

Elena’s case is not an isolated incident. In August 2024, a 36-year-old woman identified only as Abiola died while undergoing a similar buttock enlargement procedure at a clinic in the Lekki Phase 1 area of Lagos State.

The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the health and safety of residents through strengthened regulatory oversight, continuous monitoring of healthcare facilities and strict enforcement of standards across the state. Further updates, the agency said, would be provided as the investigation progresses.
