A member of the National Executive Council of the Nigerian Bar Association has accused Egbe Amofin, a Southwest political bloc within the NBA, of orchestrating a calculated campaign to destabilize the leadership of the Bar and manipulate the upcoming July elections.

Adam Tanko Jibril Esq, of the NBA Bauchi Branch and NEC-Member 2024-2026, made the allegations in a statement titled “Unmasking Egbe Amofin’s Desperate Tactics: A Threat to NBA Unity.”

According to Tanko, the recent wave of allegations against the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, is “part of a calculated and unfortunate campaign by Egbe Amofin, a Southwest political bloc within the NBA, to destabilize the leadership of the Bar and manipulate the upcoming July elections.”

“It is deeply unfortunate that a regional political bloc of lawyers could resort to such primitive tactics, seeking to impose a candidate on the NBA by demanding that the President openly declare support for their chosen candidate — Muyiwa Akinboro, SAN — while sidelining other credible contenders such as Yemi Akangbe, SAN, and Mrs Oyinkasola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, and some other lawyers who may at the appropriate time also show interest in contesting in the election,” Tanko stated.

According to Tanko, citing “reliable sources,” some senior lawyers representing the political interests of Egbe Amofin approached Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, with a request to publicly endorse Akinboro, SAN, in order to force other candidates to step down.

“The NBA President, however, bluntly refused, insisting that every qualified lawyer in Nigeria must be given a fair opportunity to choose who leads the Bar in the next election. To many, this principled stance represents the most noble act of leadership — one that upholds transparency, fairness, and inclusivity,” the statement read.

Tanko defended Osigwe’s stewardship, stating that “under Osigwe’s stewardship, the NBA has recorded unprecedented achievements, including posting a surplus of over ₦1 billion after organizing the NBA-AGC — a feat never before recorded in the history of the Association.”

He described Osigwe as “the most transparent and accessible NBA President in the last decade,” expressing shock that “Egbe Amofin continues to throw shades and fabricate allegations where none exist.”

Addressing what he described as “the most absurd accusations,” Tanko referenced claims by Muyiwa Abdulrasheed, SAN (popularly known as “Murray”), that Osigwe should resign for allegedly sharing $2,000 with some senior lawyers.

“The truth, however, is that the money in question was personally given by Senator Lawal to those senior lawyers and had nothing to do with the NBA. It may interest you to know that Muyiwa Akinboro SAN, was amongst those lawyers who collected the said $2,000, agbada materials and caps but only chose to return his $2,000 after about one week without the agbada and caps, the moment he realized that the gifts suited his dirty politics. Twisting this into an accusation against Osigwe is nothing but political mischief,” Tanko stated.

The NEC member warned that “Egbe Amofin’s actions are not only reckless but dangerous. They threaten the unity, credibility, and stability of the Nigerian Bar Association. Instead of promoting healthy competition and ideas, they have chosen mudslinging and blackmail, undermining the very principles of professionalism and integrity that the Bar stands for.”

Tanko called for Egbe Amofin to be brought to order, stating: “The legal profession must not be dragged into petty, region-based power tussles that erode public confidence in our institutions. All lawyers must rise above these divisive tactics and reject any attempt to turn the NBA into a playground for selfish political games.”

Concluding his statement, Tanko emphasized: “The NBA’s strength lies in its unity and its ability to stand above partisan interests. We must not allow Egbe Amofin’s dangerous politics to destroy that legacy.”

The allegations come as the NBA prepares for elections in July, with multiple candidates expected to contest for the presidency of the Association.
