The Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Hon. Akintunde Rotimi, has justified the delay in the passage of the amended Electoral Act, attributing it to constitutional and procedural requirements that demand broad consensus, stakeholder engagement, and harmonisation between the two chambers of the National Assembly.

Rotimi explained that although the House has already passed the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill, ongoing consultations and harmonisation with the Senate are necessary to ensure that the final legislation is robust, inclusive, and capable of addressing gaps observed during the 2023 general elections.

The lawmaker spoke at the weekend in Ikole-Ekiti, headquarters of Ikole Local Government Area, while commissioning two road projects at Isaba and Oke-Ayedun, as well as a staff quarters at Odo-Oro High School, Odo-Oro, executed as part of his constituency interventions for Ekiti North (Ikole/Oye) Federal Constituency.

Responding to public agitation over the delay, Rotimi said the Electoral Act mandates extensive consultations before amendments can be concluded, noting that rushing the process could undermine the credibility of the reforms.

“The reforms are all-encompassing and a direct result of feedback from various stakeholders. The Joint House and Senate Committee on Electoral Reforms has met extensively, held retreats, and engaged community organisations in crafting these critical reforms,” he said.

He added: “At this point, we are only required to harmonise a few areas, and that will happen very quickly. Electoral reform is a priority for us because it is a priority for Nigerians. Citizens should be able to vote freely, and their votes must count. Ensuring this right is one of the foundations of democracy.”

Rotimi also highlighted his legislative record, revealing that he has sponsored over 40 bills in the House, many aimed at deepening democracy and strengthening governance. Among them are the Sexual Harassment (Prevention) Bill, the Independent Candidacy Bill, and the Whistleblowers’ Bill, which promotes transparency and accountability in public institutions.

On the commissioned projects, Rotimi said they were executed in response to constituents’ expressed needs, reflecting the oversight and development responsibilities of lawmakers.

“Members of the House of Representatives are intentional about constituency projects. We give our constituents the opportunity to make their demands, and we work to address them,” he said.

The lawmaker appealed to Nigerians to support the administration of President Bola Tinubu, noting that sustained public support would enable the government to deliver effectively on its reform agenda and democratic promises.
