A 53-year-old lecturer, Abdulfatai Aiyede, has died under controversial circumstances after visiting a 25-year-old nursing student in Minna, the Niger State capital.

The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the incident and the arrest of the young woman, identified as Stella Joseph, in connection with the death.

According to a statement released on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Wasiu Abiodun, the lecturer travelled from Bida to Minna on January 27, 2026, to visit Stella Joseph at her residence on Niteco Road, Tunga area of Minna.

The police statement reads in part:

“On 27/1/26 at about 10 a.m., a report was received from Tudun-Wada Division that one Abdulfatai Aiyede, aged about 53 years, came to Minna from Bida and visited a friend identified as Stella Joseph, aged 25 years, at Niteco Road, Tunga, Minna. During the visit, it was reported that Stella served her guest some food, after which the victim allegedly convulsed and collapsed. He was immediately rushed to the General Hospital, Minna, where he was later confirmed dead.”

DSP Abiodun stated that Stella Joseph has been taken into custody to assist with the ongoing investigation. The deceased’s corpse has been deposited at the hospital mortuary for autopsy to determine the actual cause of death.

“The families of both parties have been contacted,” the police spokesperson added. “The case is under active investigation, and further developments will be communicated.”

No official cause of death has been released pending the outcome of the post-mortem examination. Authorities have not disclosed whether foul play is suspected or whether any substance is being tested in connection with the meal served to the deceased.
