The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Apo on Monday adjourned the trial of Abuja lawyers, Victor Giwa and Ibitade Bukola, to February 4. The lawyers face charges of alleged forgery and impersonation, specifically accused of forging documents and impersonating Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Awa Kalu to mislead the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation.

The adjournment marks the seventh time Giwa has sought to delay proceedings and the fourth time he has changed legal representation since the trial began. At the resumed hearing, Farook Akabi of the law firm of Ahmed Raji, SAN, appeared for Giwa, while Ogbu Aboje represented Ibitade. T.Y. Silas appeared for the Inspector-General of Police, and Levi E. Nwoye held a watching brief for the complainant.
Prosecuting counsel, Theophilus Silas, described the adjournment request as a deliberate tactic to frustrate the trial, noting that all processes had been exchanged and Giwa had exceeded statutory limits for adjournments. “This is the seventh date the first defendant is seeking adjournment to prevent this motion from being heard. It is also the fourth time he is changing counsel strictly to delay this trial,” Silas said.
Akabi countered that the firm had only been briefed the previous day and requested time to properly prepare the defence, explaining that Ahmed Raji, SAN, intended to personally handle the case but was unavailable. Aboje, representing the second defendant, clarified that Ibitade did not oppose a short adjournment and urged the court to hear a pending motion by Giwa in the interest of justice.
The trial judge expressed concern over Giwa’s conduct, noting that he had represented himself and appeared with multiple SANs and over 30 different counsel during the proceedings. “Each time the first defendant appears, he adopts a storyline to prevent the matter from proceeding. The court works with evidence, not theatrics,” the judge said.
Despite acknowledging the pattern of delays, the court adjourned the matter in the interest of justice to February 4 for continuation of the hearing.
Notably, Professor Awa Kalu had previously written to the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, denying any knowledge of forged documents or complaints against Giwa and Ibitade, asserting that his letterhead had never been misused.
