Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s much-anticipated defection from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has encountered a major setback following the ruling party’s refusal to grant him a written guarantee for an automatic gubernatorial ticket in the 2027 elections.

POLITICS DIGEST reports that despite weeks of behind-the-scenes negotiations, APC leaders at both state and national levels have maintained a firm stance against the governor’s preconditions for switching parties.

Sources close to the negotiations revealed that Governor Yusuf’s defection package extends beyond a simple party change. His conditions reportedly include a formal assurance of the 2027 gubernatorial ticket, the right to nominate a federal minister representing Kano State, and authority to replace existing Kano-based federal appointees with his preferred loyalists.

However, the APC has rejected these demands, insisting that all aspirants must undergo the party’s standard primary election processes.

A senior APC figure from the North-West, speaking on condition of anonymity, emphasized the party’s commitment to internal democracy.

“APC operates a uniform standard. No one, whether a governor or a minister, is exempt from the party’s democratic procedures,” the source stated, drawing parallels with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, who joined or remained in the party without seeking special concessions.

The governor’s political calculations are further complicated by the presence of Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin, who is widely regarded as a formidable contender for the 2027 Kano governorship race. Senator Jibrin commands significant influence within the APC’s state structure, making any guarantee of an automatic ticket politically untenable.

In what observers interpret as a response to mounting political pressure, Governor Yusuf convened the first State Executive Council meeting of 2026 in Abuja on Friday. Notably, he appeared in his signature Kwankwasiyya red cap and prominently displayed the NNPP flag throughout the session a symbolic gesture that frustrated expectations of an imminent defection announcement.

While the governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to good governance during the meeting, the gathering also exposed emerging internal tensions within his executive team.

Reports indicate that Deputy Governor Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo has expressed his intention to remain loyal to the NNPP, regardless of his principal’s political maneuvering. This position could trigger a constitutional and political crisis should Yusuf ultimately proceed with defection to the APC.

Meanwhile, Governor Yusuf’s political mentor and leader of the influential Kwankwasiyya movement, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is reportedly exploring alternative political strategies ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Having warned his protégé against joining the APC, Kwankwaso is said to be considering the creation of a “Third Force” coalition that could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape. Sources suggest he may align with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a platform increasingly attractive to heavyweight politicians seeking alternatives to the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The proposed coalition is reportedly attracting interest from notable political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi. Such an alliance would represent a significant realignment in Nigerian politics, particularly in the northern region where the Kwankwasiyya movement has maintained a loyal following.

For Kwankwaso, the creation of this alternative platform appears crucial to preserving political relevance, especially as the movement faces the potential loss of its only sitting governor.

The standoff between Governor Yusuf and the APC leadership highlights the growing tension between political pragmatism and party loyalty in Nigeria’s evolving democratic landscape. It also underscores the challenges facing politicians who attempt to negotiate special terms in exchange for party defection.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, the resolution of this impasse will likely have far-reaching consequences for Kano State politics and the broader realignment of political forces across northern Nigeria.

Governor Yusuf now faces a critical decision: accept the APC’s terms and compete for the ticket through the party’s primary process, remain in the NNPP and risk political isolation, or join his mentor Kwankwaso in building a new political alliance.

The coming weeks are expected to provide clarity on which path the Kano State governor will ultimately choose.
