A medical doctor, Dr. Ibrahim Tahir, who was abducted on January 2, 2026, has been released after his family paid a ransom of N50 million to his kidnappers. The release comes amid tragedy, as his younger brother was killed by the abductors during the ordeal.

According to reports, Dr. Tahir and his younger brother were kidnapped at their residence along City Pride Road, Igbira Camp, Auchi, while opening the gate to their compound around 7:30 p.m. The abductors initially demanded a higher sum reports earlier in the incident mentioned demands as high as N200 million, later negotiated down but eventually settled for N50 million.

The ransom was paid in two installments: N20 million and N30 million. Dr. Tahir was released on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at approximately 8:00 p.m. His father confirmed that the payment was raised through contributions from family, friends, non-governmental organizations, and well-wishers.

Tragically, the younger brother was killed by the kidnappers. His body was discovered on January 5, 2026, near Orley River, close to Down City Pride Road, Igbira Camp. The father expressed mixed emotions: relief at his surviving son’s freedom but profound grief over the loss of another son.

Dr. Tahir sustained a bullet graze to his leg during captivity or the release process and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital. Local vigilantes and hunters reportedly laid an ambush for the kidnappers, during which one of the abductors sustained gunshot wounds.

The Edo State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the release on Thursday, stating: “I can confirm to you that the doctor has been released.”

This incident highlights the persistent issue of kidnapping for ransom in parts of Nigeria, including Edo State, where such crimes continue despite security efforts. The family has thanked those who contributed to the ransom and those involved in the eventual release.
