Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has dismissed widespread speculation about an imminent defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), clarifying that he does not need to “officially join” the party because he has been an integral member of its opposition coalition since its formation.

Speaking during a live X Space session on Sunday night, December 28, Obi addressed rumors that had intensified over the weekend, including reports of a planned formal declaration rally in Enugu on December 31.
“I am not joining ADC. I can’t rejoin what I am already a part of,” Obi stated emphatically. “I’ve been part of the coalition from day one.”
He further quashed claims of internal maneuvering, saying: “Nobody is stepping down for me in ADC.” Obi emphasized that the coalition’s priority remains collective action to address Nigeria’s challenges rather than individual ambitions.
On his relationship with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar who has also aligned with the ADC-led opposition bloc—Obi maintained a tone of respect: “We have all agreed to work together, and Atiku remains my respected leader.”
The clarification comes amid heightened political realignments as the 2027 elections approach. The ADC has emerged as a key platform for a broad opposition front, including figures like Atiku, former Kaduna Governor Nasir el-Rufai, and former Rivers Governor Rotimi Amaechi, following a coalition launch earlier in 2025.
Recent reports had suggested Obi was finalizing a high-profile move to the party, with some sources claiming loyalists were mobilizing for a defection event. However, Obi’s statements appear to downplay the need for a formal ceremony, framing his involvement as longstanding and seamless.
Obi also reaffirmed his intention to contest in 2027, telling listeners: “Peter Obi will be on the ballot in 2027. I need your support; I need your prayers.” He dismissed speculation about accepting a vice-presidential role, quipping: “So I am flying all over the world to learn how to govern in order to be vice?”
