Charles Omole, a lawyer and author, says the cabal in the late ex-President Muhammadu Buhari administration often planted stories in newspapers for the commander-in-chief’s reading pleasure.

Omole made the remark on Thursday in an interview on Channels Television, in relation to his newly launched biography titled From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari.

The lawyer authored the biography, which highlights some of Buhari’s legacies during his tenure as civilian president from 2015 to 2023.

Speaking about some of the details in the book, Omole said every Nigerian president since 1999 has had their own cabal that shaped and influenced policies.

He noted that a clique is “not necessarily a bad thing” in an administration if its members share the interests of the president, as they can become a “force multiplier.”

Omole explained that in the Buhari-led administration, there was an “overarching” cabal, whereas in the Tinubu government, there are five different cabals.

He identified the five cabals in the Tinubu administration as Femi Gbajabiamila’s group, Seyi Tinubu’s camp, Remi Tinubu’s camp, the principal private secretary’s camp, and the geriatric camp, headed by President Tinubu himself.

“Like I said in the book, every president since 1999 has had his own cabal,” he said.

“The current administration is slightly more complicated. The president has more than one cabal. Cabals are not necessarily bad; they can become a force multiplier. If they share the leader’s intentions, they can help magnify his programs and achieve better results.

“But the problem arises when cabals pursue their own agendas.

“For example, there are things I did not include in the book because they were probably too sensitive.

“One thing about Buhari is that he loved reading newspapers. Everyone knows that from his early days; he was a newspaper man.

“There were reports that the cabal even created a newspaper specifically for him, planting stories they wanted him to read.

“The challenge with someone like Buhari was that there was one overarching cabal, but in the current government, there are multiple cabals. I think this has both advantages and disadvantages.

“From what I can see, the current administration has at least five cabals. Interestingly, one of them is actually headed by the president himself, based on my analysis.”
