Residents of Dansadau town in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State on Tuesday, December 17, physically assaulted Hon. Kabiru Mikailu, APC member of the Zamfara State House of Assembly representing Maru South Constituency, amid accusations of neglect and poor representation.

The incident occurred during a historic visit by Governor Dauda Lawal to the insecurity-plagued community – reportedly the first by a sitting governor in over 20 years. Mikailu, who was accompanying the governor, was confronted by an irate mob as soon as he was spotted.

Eyewitnesses and viral videos circulating online show the lawmaker being slapped, shoved, and manhandled by angry youths. Residents shouted accusations, claiming Mikailu had abandoned the constituency since his election: “He never comes here – not for Sallah, not during bandit attacks. We only see him on television!”

Locals expressed deep frustration over his alleged failure to visit the area, engage with constituents, or commiserate with families affected by recurrent banditry, which has devastated the region.

Security personnel attached to the governor’s convoy quickly intervened, shielding Mikailu and restoring order before the situation escalated further. No serious injuries were reported, and no arrests have been confirmed as of now.

Despite the unrest, Governor Lawal’s visit proceeded with a massive turnout from residents welcoming his administration’s initiatives. He flagged off the reconstruction of the over 90-kilometre Dansadau-Gusau road – a long-demanded project aimed at improving connectivity and economic opportunities.

The governor also ordered the immediate rehabilitation of Dansadau General Hospital and the installation of solar-powered streetlights to enhance security and living conditions.

Reaffirming his commitment, Governor Lawal stated: “We are determined to restore security, rebuild critical infrastructure, and ensure every community feels the impact of good governance.”

In recognition of his development efforts, the Emir of Dansadau, Alhaji Garba Muhammad (Sarkin Kudu Dansadau), conferred the traditional title of Garkuwan Dansadau (Protector of Dansadau) on the governor during a turbaning ceremony.

Dansadau has long suffered from bandit attacks, displacement, and underdeveloped infrastructure, amplifying residents’ grievances toward local representatives.
