A man identified as Segun Martins was apprehended at General Tunde Idiagbon International Airport in Ilorin after attempting to stow away on an Overland Airways aircraft bound for Lagos.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Nigeria’s apex air transport regulator, confirmed the incident in a statement released Wednesday afternoon. Martins, a resident of Ilorin, reportedly gained unauthorized access to the aircraft’s undercarriage around 3:02 p.m. local time, just as the flight was preparing to taxi for takeoff. He allegedly tried to conceal himself between the plane’s tires, mistakenly believing the aircraft was heading to the United States.

Ground security personnel at the airport spotted the suspicious activity and immediately intervened, pulling Martins from his precarious hiding spot before the aircraft could depart. He was swiftly handed over to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) police for interrogation and further investigation.

Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the NCAA, detailed the close call in a post on X (formerly Twitter), emphasizing the dangers of such reckless actions. “At approximately 1502 hours, a male, identified as Segun Martins, gained unauthorized access to the foot of an Overland aircraft that was about to taxi for takeoff and attempted to conceal himself between the aircraft tyres,” Achimugu wrote. He added, “Ground security apprehended him and he was immediately handed over to the Airport Police for further investigation.”

Martins reportedly told authorities that he believed the aircraft was bound for the United States and intended to escape by hiding under it.

Overland Airways, which operated the flight, confirmed that the aircraft was en route to Lagos, not the U.S., highlighting Martins’ fatal miscalculation. A spokesperson for the airline described the incident as “a serious security breach” but commended the rapid response that ensured passenger safety.

Authorities in Kwara State have launched a probe into how Martins breached perimeter security, with preliminary findings pointing to a lapse near a construction zone. He faces charges of trespassing, endangering aircraft safety, and violating aviation security protocols under the Civil Aviation Act.
