*As Rep. Moore Says Trip Undertaken in Name of Lord, on Behalf of American People

Nigeria’s National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, hosted a delegation from the United States Congress on Sunday, underscoring ongoing efforts to bolster bilateral security ties despite simmering diplomatic frictions over allegations of religious persecution.

In a post on X, Ribadu described the meeting as a continuation of high-level dialogues initiated in Washington, D.C., focusing on shared priorities like counter-terrorism, regional stability, and defense collaboration. “This morning, I received a US Congressional delegation on a fact-finding mission to Nigeria, following our earlier engagements in Washington, D.C., on shared security priorities,” he wrote.

The delegation comprised Representatives Mario Díaz-Balart, Norma Torres, Scott Franklin, Juan Ciscomani, and Riley M. Moore. US Ambassador to Nigeria Richard Mills also attended, a detail Ribadu highlighted as evidence of the “significance both countries place on this partnership.”

Discussions centered on enhancing counter-terrorism efforts, coordinating regional security measures, and identifying new avenues to fortify the strategic alliance between Abuja and Washington. Ribadu expressed optimism, stating, “I’m optimistic this engagement will deepen trust, collaboration, and shared commitment to peace and security.”

The visit occurs against a backdrop of strained relations following US President Donald Trump’s recent redesignation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) for alleged religious freedom violations. The move, announced earlier, included veiled threats of potential US military involvement and prompted a US House Subcommittee on Africa hearing on November 20 to assess its ramifications. House Republicans, at Trump’s directive on October 31, convened a joint briefing warning of escalating religious violence, tasking Rep. Moore and the House Appropriations Committee with investigating claims of Christian persecution and reporting to the White House.

Nigeria’s Federal Government has firmly rejected the accusations, asserting that insecurity driven by banditry, insurgency, and communal clashes impacts citizens across all faiths without systemic bias.

Undeterred, Nigeria has ramped up diplomatic outreach. On November 20, Ribadu met US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth at the Pentagon to discuss joint strategies against regional threats. That same day, President Bola Tinubu greenlit Nigeria’s delegation for the US-Nigeria Joint Working Group, a direct result of the Washington talks.

Rep. Riley M. Moore, wrapping up his participation, shared a positive note on X: “Just ending a very productive visit to Nigeria and rounds of meetings. More details to come. Happy Sunday. God is Great!” He framed his trip as undertaken “in the name of the Lord and on behalf of the American people,” though specifics on his itinerary remained undisclosed.
