The Federal Government has reportedly secured the release of 100 schoolchildren abducted from St. Mary’s Private Catholic Primary and Secondary School in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State.

The abduction occurred on 21 November 2025, when armed bandits attacked the school in the remote Papiri community. Around 2:00 a.m., the gunmen arrived on motorbikes and stormed the school dormitories over a three-hour period, abducting 315 people 303 students and 12 teachers.

Security forces and community vigilantes were immediately deployed to comb nearby forests in search of the abductees. In the aftermath, 50 pupils managed to escape on the first day and were reunited with their families. However, 265 individuals, including 253 children and all 12 teachers, remained in captivity.

In response to the crisis, the Federal Government imposed a 24-hour security cordon and launched aerial surveillance across parts of Kwara, Kebbi, and Niger States. President Bola Tinubu also cancelled planned international travel to personally oversee efforts to secure the release of the victims.

Authorities further ordered the indefinite closure of all schools in Niger State, as well as several federal institutions in high-risk regions, to prevent further attacks.
