*Crisis Erupts in Violence, Teargas As PDP Headquarters Becomes Battleground in Factional Power Struggle

The internal crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) exploded into open warfare on Tuesday as rival factions transformed the party’s national secretariat into a chaotic battleground, forcing police to fire volleys of teargas to prevent a total breakdown of order.

The dramatic scene at Wadata Plaza unfolded as two groups vying for control of the opposition party one led by newly elected National Chairman Kabiru Turaki and the other backed by the powerful Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike attempted to hold parallel National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings.

Earlier, Turaki had sounded an alarm, calling on former US President Donald Trump and the international community to intervene in Nigeria’s “worsening political climate.” He declared the nation’s democracy “under threat” and accused Minister Wike of using armed thugs with police support to disrupt party activities.

“I want to call on President Trump… he should come and save democracy in Nigeria. Democracy is under threat,” Turaki stated, adding that he and his supporters were “willing to lay down our lives to protect our office.”

His words proved prophetic as tensions escalated hours later. The situation ignited when Samuel Anyanwu, the national secretary aligned with Wike, arrived with supporters. Heated arguments quickly spiraled into physical scuffles as both camps wrestled for control of the building.

Amid the rising hostility, police struggled to maintain a fragile peace. The confrontation reached a new peak when Governors Seyi Makinde and Bala Mohammed arrived with Turaki and forcefully pushed their way into the NEC hall, meeting stiff resistance from the pro-Wike faction already inside.

Witnesses described scenes of pushing, shouting, and violence as the governors’ group eventually overpowered their rivals, pushing them out of the secretariat compound. In response, police led by a Deputy Commissioner fired teargas canisters, triggering panic and a stampede. Party members, staff, and journalists fled, coughing and shielding their faces as the acrid smoke filled the air.

In a final dramatic twist, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike arrived at the scene in a convoy, cutting through the lingering haze of teargas. However, his arrival was too late; his faction had already been forcibly ejected from the premises, leaving the Turaki-led group in temporary control of the scarred and tense headquarters.

The unresolved power struggle signals a deepening crisis for the PDP, threatening its stability ahead of future elections as both factions refuse to cede ground.
