A disqualified chairmanship aspirant in the 2026 Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Gwagwalada Branch election, N.D. Abdulsalam, Esq., has rejected his disqualification, describing it as an attempt to undermine the will of members of the Branch.

Abdulsalam, in a statement titled “My Disqualification Will Not Stand”, said he had anticipated the decision, alleging that there was a deliberate effort to produce a predetermined outcome in the election.

He maintained that his disqualification was not merely an attack on his candidacy, but an attempt to disenfranchise members of the Gwagwalada Bar and entrench what he described as a culture of administrative exclusion.

“I address you today not as a martyr but as a believer in our collective pursuit of a free, fair, and transparent electoral process,” he said.

According to him, the decision was reached through “nocturnal” deliberations and based on grounds he described as weak and incapable of standing the test of law or logic.

He said he had already prepared his appeal to the Branch Election Appeals Committee, expressing confidence that the panel would review the matter and set aside the disqualification.

“This disqualification, born of nocturnal deliberations and built on otiose grounds, cannot stand the test of law or logic,” Abdulsalam said.

He also linked his disqualification to previous developments within the Branch, including his alleged removal from the official WhatsApp platform and a petition reportedly filed against him before the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee, LPDC.

According to him, these actions represent the price of demanding a Bar that belongs to all members rather than a selected few.

“The road has been intentionally difficult. From the unjust removal from our official WhatsApp platform to the frivolous petition filed at the LPDC, these are the cost of demanding a Bar that belongs to all members, not a selected few,” he stated.

Abdulsalam urged his supporters and members of the Branch to remain calm, focused and resolute, assuring them that he would continue to pursue what he described as integrity, justice and freedom within the Bar.

He said no committee could disqualify the values of truth, justice and the freedom of the Bar.

“I find immense strength in your unwavering support. I urge you all to remain calm, focused, and resolute. We will continue to fly the flag of integrity,” he added.

Abdulsalam expressed optimism that the Election Appeals Committee would recognise what he described as an injustice and restore his candidacy.

“I am confident that the Election Appeal Committee will recognise this injustice for what it is. Truth, justice and the freedom of the Bar are values that no Committee can disqualify,” he said.

The development comes amid growing tension ahead of the June 2026 NBA Gwagwalada Branch election, following the publication of the final list of cleared candidates by the Electoral Committee.
