The Federal Government has issued a firm directive prohibiting the sale or transfer of any property belonging to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) within or around airport premises, emphasizing that such assets are exclusively reserved for aviation purposes.

This announcement followed sweeping approvals by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) for projects aimed at strengthening airport safety, technology, concessions, and security to enhance Nigeria’s aviation sector.

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, disclosed the decisions while briefing State House correspondents after Thursday’s FEC meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu. He stressed that the directive overrides any previous asset disposal plans, declaring FAAN properties as critical national assets that must remain under government control.

“We will not concede any of these properties to private individuals. Anyone who believes they have purchased such assets should take note,” Keyamo said, explaining that aviation personnel such as firefighters and navigational officers must reside close to airports for emergency readiness. He added that excluding the properties from sale was driven by safety and security concerns.

The FEC also approved eight key projects for the aviation ministry, including maintenance contracts for Aeronautical Information Management (AIM) systems at five international airports Abuja, Lagos, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Enugu. Other approvals covered nationwide deployment of advanced Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) power systems and 14 Very High Frequency (VHF) communication facilities for the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) to improve air navigation safety.

In alignment with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, the council approved the procurement of 15 airport rescue and firefighting vehicles for the international airports. It also endorsed the construction of a permanent headquarters for NAMA in Abuja, replacing its current rented office. “Hosting command-and-control infrastructure in private buildings poses security risks,” the minister explained.

Among the notable approvals was the full business case for the concession of Port Harcourt International Airport. Keyamo revealed that investor interest has surged under the Tinubu administration, with six bidders now competing for management rights. “Before we assumed office, no investor showed interest. Now, over six bidders are competing to run Port Harcourt,” he said, noting that the move would ease fiscal pressure without threatening jobs.

Addressing concerns from aviation unions, Keyamo assured that no worker would be laid off as a result of the concessions. “I am pro-union and pro-worker. Nobody will lose his job. Affected staff will be redeployed to other airports,” he stated. While urging unions to support the reform agenda, he cautioned that “unions will not dictate government policy. We cannot continue to waste public funds on loss-making airports.”

The FEC also ratified the rollout of a contactless biometric passenger verification system linked with the National Identification Number (NIN) to curb identity fraud. “Too many people board aircraft using fake identities. This system will confirm passengers are who they claim to be,” the minister said.

Additionally, contracts were approved for installing airfield lighting at selected domestic airports to extend operational hours and increase airline revenue. “Some airports shut by 6 p.m. because they lack lighting. This upgrade will allow operations till 10 or 11 p.m.,” Keyamo added.

He reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare and the safety of the aviation sector, stating that the ongoing reforms are designed to improve safety, efficiency, and global competitiveness while ensuring that aviation workers remain protected.
