Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has issued an executive order directing the four emirates — Kano, Rano, Gaya, and Karaye — to fully resume the organisation of the annual Durbar festivals.

He announced the decision at the opening ceremony of the maiden edition of the Kano State Festival of Arts and Culture, popularly known as KanFest.

For several years, the Kano State Police Command had suspended Durbar activities over persistent security concerns. Governor Yusuf said bringing back the centuries-old tradition is a critical step toward preserving Kano’s cultural identity and boosting tourism.

“In celebration of the honour done to Kano by UNESCO for inscribing the famous Kano Durbar among the world’s intangible cultural heritage, I hereby grant an Executive Order to the four emirates to continue organising the annual Durbar festivals,” the governor declared.

He added that the state government and all 44 local government chairmen would provide full support to ensure the festivals are safely and proudly showcased to the world.

Describing KanFest as a landmark cultural milestone, Yusuf reiterated his administration’s commitment to reviving the cultural sector as a driver of unity, identity, and economic growth.

The governor also highlighted ongoing heritage conservation projects, including the restoration of the Gidan Dan Hausa Monument, Gidan Rumfa Palace, ancient city walls, and historic dye pits — some of which date back over seven centuries.

According to him, efforts are also underway to upgrade the History and Culture Bureau into a world-class centre for research, documentation, and innovation, aimed at empowering artisans and expanding Kano’s cultural industries globally.

Governor Yusuf called on citizens to value and protect the state’s cultural heritage, describing it as “a living asset” for future generations.
