As the world marks the 2025 International Day of the Girl Child, former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Lagos Branch, Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN, has called for renewed commitment to empowering girls and young women as catalysts for national transformation.

In a statement issued on Friday, Akangbe said this year’s theme “The Girl I Am, the Change I Lead: Girls on the Frontlines of Crisis” underscores the vital role girls play as “powerful agents of transformation” rather than passive recipients of change.

He urged Nigerians to reflect on how well the nation is supporting girls amid poverty, inequality, and conflict, warning that the answer to that question “will ultimately define the future of our profession, our justice system, and our nation.”

Addressing members of the legal community, the Senior Advocate of Nigeria emphasized the need for lawyers to “champion girls’ rights both in law and in practice.” He said:

“Whether in the courtroom, through legal aid, or in policy advocacy, we have the power and responsibility to dismantle the barriers that silence their voices or deny them justice.”

Akangbe further called on senior members of the Bar to mentor female law students and early-career lawyers, noting that “they are tomorrow’s judges, advocates, and leaders.” He added that creating visible pathways for young women in the legal profession was essential for gender balance and professional continuity.

He also highlighted the importance of using public platforms to amplify the voices and stories of girls aspiring to leadership roles, saying that representation inspires courage and ambition.

Commending the Nigerian Bar Association Women Forum (NBAWF) for its efforts in advancing gender inclusion, Akangbe urged greater support to expand its reach and impact, ensuring that “women lawyers across Nigeria have access to networks, opportunities, and safe spaces to learn, lead, and thrive.”

Reaffirming his personal commitment to inclusion, he said:

“When we uplift our girls, we uplift the entire Bar — and we strengthen the very foundation of our nation.”

Akangbe concluded with a message of encouragement to Nigerian girls:

“Your dreams are valid, your voice matters, and your future belongs to you. We will continue to walk with you, advocate for you, and open doors of opportunity for you.”
