The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has thrown his weight behind the African Democratic Congress (ADC) chairmanship candidate for Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Dr Moses Paul, popularly known as Dr MO.

Obi made the declaration on Wednesday at Merit House, Abuja, during a special independent programme organised by Dr MO and his councillor candidates to sensitise residents ahead of the official flag-off of his campaign.

“I have been to many places with Dr MO and I know he will not disappoint,” Obi said. “Dr MO will not change, but because human beings can change, I would be shocked if he does.”

The AMAC Local Government Area Council election is scheduled for February 2026. Dr MO, the National Secretary of the Obidient Movement of Nigeria, also received strong endorsement from the movement during the event. Dr Yunusa Tanko, the National Coordinator, formally announced the group’s support under the programme themed “We Don Tire.”

Addressing the crowd, Dr Moses Paul described AMAC as having failed its residents, citing challenges such as poorly managed markets, collapsed waste systems, abandoned schools, non-functional health centres, rising insecurity, multiple taxation on businesses, and dilapidated infrastructure.

“The bitter truth must be told: AMAC has failed,” he said. “Our people deserve dignity, prosperity, and service from their government.”

Dr Paul outlined a bold vision for transforming AMAC if elected, including:

  • Modernising markets into centres of prosperity.
  • Establishing a transparent, job-creating waste management system.
  • Reviving schools with proper equipment and staffing.
  • Restoring primary healthcare centres with essential drugs and community health programmes.
  • Strengthening security through partnerships with agencies, traditional leaders, and communities.
  • Harmonising taxation to protect businesses while boosting revenue.
  • Delivering people-driven infrastructure across all 12 wards.

He said his campaign would rest on three pillars: People-First Governance, Accountability and Transparency, and Innovation through partnerships with civil society and the private sector.

Dr Paul added, “If AMAC works, Abuja works. If Abuja works, Nigeria works.”

The programme, which attracted a large turnout of civil society groups and ADC members, allowed residents to express readiness to support leaders who demonstrate compassion, competence, character, and capacity.
