Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has assured Nigerians that the interests of the Yoruba people will occupy a central place in his administration’s policies if he wins the 2027 presidential election.
Addressing concerns over possible ethnic bias, Atiku dismissed fears that a Hausa/Fulani presidency under him might dominate the Yoruba or other groups. “The entire Yoruba stock is my larger extended family and in-laws,” he said in a statement issued Thursday in Abuja by his media consultant, Kola Johnson.
Atiku highlighted his deep personal and marital ties to the Yoruba as evidence of his commitment. He cited his first marriage in the 1970s to Titi, an Ijesha-born Yoruba woman, with whom he has four children. “My children with Titi sometimes call me ‘Baba Rere,’ meaning good father. I am extremely in love with my children and serve as a good father to them,” he added.
He described his wife as a “Jewel of Inestimable Value” and reiterated that the Yoruba have always been among his closest friends and political allies. Atiku also stressed his long-standing non-tribal disposition, saying he has always interacted naturally with people of diverse tribes, ethnicities, and religions.
“The interest of the Yorubas will always occupy a topmost place in my policymaking and governance if, by the special Grace of Allah, I am lucky to be president in 2027,” Atiku affirmed.
