The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Kano Branch, has strongly condemned recent incidents involving the unlawful arrest and harassment of lawyers in Kano State.
In a statement issued on September 23, 2025, the NBA Kano Chairman, Usman Umar Fari, highlighted two disturbing cases. On September 19, 2025, Mohammad Bashir Adam, a practicing lawyer, was arrested by police officers from Abuja while attending to clients, despite presenting two valid identification cards one from the NBA and another from his workplace. Adam was handcuffed, dragged into a vehicle, and driven towards Abuja before being released, with the officers admitting it was a case of mistaken identity.
Two days later, on September 22, 2025, Uba Sani Hamza, another lawyer, was arrested at Norman’s Land Magistrate Court in Kano by officers from the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Center.
Hamza was reportedly detained due to sharing a surname with a suspect accused of insulting government officials on social media and allegedly having contact with a client sought by the police.
The NBA Kano Branch described these actions as part of a worrying pattern of human rights violations under the current leadership of the Inspector General of Police.
The association called on the Attorney General of the Federation to intervene, hold the Inspector General accountable, and ensure the immediate release of Uba Sani Hamza, stressing that the federal government bears responsibility for his safety and welfare.
