The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos State Safety Commission, has issued a stop-work notice on a six-storey building under construction at 28, Saka Tinubu Street, Victoria Island, citing safety breaches that threaten lives and property.
The action follows complaints from residents who raised alarms over the building’s activities, which reportedly caused damage to neighboring properties, vehicles, and posed dangers to pedestrians. Residents reported that boulders and planks were falling from the site, damaging walls, windows, ceilings, and cars, with concerns that people could be seriously injured or killed.
In an exclusive statement to our correspondent on Sunday, the Director-General and CEO of the Lagos State Safety Commission, Lanre Mojola, confirmed that further inspections were conducted after an initial abatement notice served to the contractors was ignored.
“Sequel to the publication in The PUNCH Newspaper dated September 2, 2025, the DG/CEO authorised the commission’s officials at Oniru to visit the site again on September 11, 2025 for a thorough investigation. Preliminary findings revealed that all prior safety infractions were not rectified, nor was the invitation to the commission honoured,” Mojola said.
The commission has now served contravention and stop-work notices, giving the contractors 48 hours to report to the commission. During a phone conversation, the project engineer, Otunba Ayeni, claimed that work on the site had been completed. However, officials faulted him, noting that the required safety measures and documentation had been ignored.
Residents said the building reportedly belongs to a prominent traditional ruler in the South-West, whose identity has not been disclosed.
