The Body of Vice Chairmen (BOVC) of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has commended the recent constitutional amendment ratified at the NBA Annual General Meeting (AGM), which increases the Bar Practising Fee (BPF) allocation to branches from 10% to 20%, with 10% specifically designated for Human Rights Committees.

In a statement signed by Olajide Abiodun, N.P., Chairman of the BOVC on 30th August 2025, the association described the move as a “historic and landmark provision” that establishes a statutory minimum funding framework for Human Rights Committees across NBA branches.

The funding is expected to enhance the committees’ capacity to carry out legal aid, advocacy, and protection of fundamental rights within their jurisdictions, effectively institutionalizing human rights work as a core mandate of the Bar.

The BOVC expressed profound appreciation to NBA President, Mr. Afam Osigwe, SAN, and the leadership of the Association for their vision and commitment to the reform. The AGM was also acknowledged for unanimously endorsing the amendment.

Special recognition was given to Mr. John Aikpokpo-Martins, former 1st Vice of the NBA and member of the BOVC Governing Council, for his pioneering advocacy and invaluable contributions in bringing the amendment to fruition.

The BOVC affirmed its readiness to ensure that the increased funding translates into tangible impact for NBA members, local communities, and Nigerians at large.
