A 27-year-old welder, Emmanuel Longji, was on Friday arraigned at the Life Camp Chief Magistrates’ Court in Abuja for allegedly stealing electrical wires worth N17.5 million from his employer.
The police charged Longji, who resides in Angwan Sarki, Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Road, Abuja, with theft.
Prosecution counsel, Mrs. Charity Nwachukwu, told the court that the complainant, Mr. Musa Omale, Chief Security Officer (CSO) of Idu Nairda Warehouse, reported the matter to Life Camp Police Station on August 9.
Nwachukwu stated that on the same day, the complainant discovered that several electrical wires belonging to the company were missing from the warehouse. She alleged that the defendant dishonestly took various types of electrical cables valued at N17.5 million.
During police investigation and interrogation, the defendant allegedly made a confessional statement after the stolen cables were recovered. However, he could not give a satisfactory account of his actions, the prosecutor added, noting that the offence contravened Section 289 of the Penal Code.
The Chief Magistrate, Musa Jobbo, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N500,000 with one surety of like sum. Jobbo ordered that the surety reside within the court’s jurisdiction and provide valid identification.
The case was adjourned until October 22 for hearing, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
