Lagos State University (LASU) has celebrated one of its own, Lawal Maryam Abiodun, for emerging as the Best Graduating Female Student and Second Overall Best Graduating Student at the 2025 Call to Bar ceremony of the Nigerian Law School, held in Abuja on July 10.

Maryam, a graduate of LASU’s Faculty of Law (Common and Islamic Law), stood out among 5,725 students called to the Bar this year, securing eight prestigious prizes, including the Best Student in Corporate Law Practice.
The Vice-Chancellor of LASU, Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, described the achievement as a moment of immense pride for the university, saying it reaffirmed LASU’s status as a hub of academic excellence and professional distinction.
“This remarkable achievement underscores the high standards of education and mentorship at LASU. It reflects our commitment to nurturing globally competitive graduates who will stand out anywhere in the world,” she said.
Representing the VC at the Call to Bar ceremony, Professor Kareem Olatoye, Dean of the Faculty of Law, expressed profound admiration for Maryam’s accomplishment. He described her as “a true ambassador and a shining example of the excellence we instil in our students.”
He encouraged other students to emulate her commitment, brilliance, and discipline.
Maryam’s feat also drew praise from Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, said her academic excellence had once again demonstrated LASU’s capacity to produce top-tier professionals.
“Lawal Maryam is a shining ambassador for both LASU and Lagos State. Her success on the national stage is a source of pride to us all,” Sanwo-Olu said.
Until her graduation, Maryam was known for her academic distinction within LASU. Her dual honours now serve as both a personal triumph and an inspiration to aspiring lawyers across Nigeria.
The university community hailed her success as a vivid reflection of its motto, For Truth and Service, and a testament to what is achievable when diligence meets purpose.
