The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has issued a public warning against deliberate efforts to undermine its newly launched Intelligent Company Registration Portal (ICRP), following widespread outrage over the approval of controversial business names such as “Boko Haram Training Hub” and “Nigeria Must Scatter Enterprises.”

In a statement released on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, through its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the CAC acknowledged growing concerns over the performance of its AI-driven portal, which was launched earlier this month to fast-track business registration processes in Nigeria. The Commission disclosed that some users have been attempting to manipulate the portal’s artificial intelligence system by intentionally submitting inappropriate or provocative names.

“The ICRP is an AI-driven system. Like all modern artificial intelligence, it is learning, adapting, and evolving with every interaction. It is not static — it is getting smarter by the day,” the Commission stated.

The CAC reaffirmed its commitment to refining the system to deliver faster, smarter, and more compliant services to Nigerians. While urging users to provide constructive feedback, it warned against coordinated attempts to discredit the ongoing digital reforms through deliberate manipulation.

However, this statement follows a public backlash over the approval of names deemed offensive, dangerous, and contrary to public policy. Legal practitioners and accredited CAC agents have expressed alarm, noting that the AI-powered portal had recently accepted names like “Explosives Making Enterprises,” “Bandits Food Supply,” and “Nuclear Proliferation Services.”

Manir Faisal, a lawyer and CAC-accredited agent, condemned the system’s current operation, describing it as “unintelligent, inaccurate, and highly inefficient.” He noted that while automation is welcome, the lack of human oversight has led to glaring errors that threaten national security and public morality.

“Instead of improving the old platform, the Commission replaced it with an ‘intelligent’ system that now approves clearly inappropriate names. This would never have happened under human review,” Faisal wrote in a widely shared Facebook post.

Other legal commentators, such as Ahmad Aminu Ahmad, argued that the AI system lacks the nuanced understanding necessary to flag misleading or offensive names, which are expressly prohibited under Section 30(1) of the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA).

“It’s easy for AI to detect identical names, but when it comes to names that are undesirable or contrary to public policy, it struggles. That’s a human judgment area,” Ahmad said.

The Registrar General of the CAC, Ishaq Hussaini Magaji, has since addressed the issue, assuring Nigerians that the ICRP is being continuously improved and that public feedback remains vital to its development.

“We value all genuine feedback. It helps us fine-tune the system. But let us not allow a few individuals to manipulate the process and cast doubt on progress. Together, let’s build a system that works for all,” Magaji stated.

Despite the backlash, the CAC has remained steadfast in defending the ICRP and its role in Nigeria’s digital transformation. It reiterated that while some missteps may occur in the early stages of deploying advanced technology, it remains committed to enhancing regulatory efficiency and promoting ease of doing business.

Public attention now turns to whether the CAC will heed calls to reintroduce human oversight, tighten AI controls, and urgently review all previously approved business names for compliance with legal and ethical standards.
