A disturbing case of assault on a young female legal practitioner, Anosike Olachi Madonna, Esq., by court officials at the Owerri North Magistrate Court, Awaka, has sparked outrage across Nigeria’s legal community and triggered a swift response from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Owerri Branch, According bibcollar report.

The incident occurred on Friday, June 20, 2025, when Madonna, a member of the NBA Owerri Branch, was physically assaulted and verbally abused by Mrs. Emenike Chinwe Augustine, the Assistant Registrar of the court, while trying to file a court process.

In a public account of the encounter, Madonna described how she arrived in court early only to discover the magistrate was unavailable. After waiting for court staff to resume, she politely raised concerns about an omitted fee in a document assessment, prompting an aggressive outburst from Mrs. Emenike.

“She grabbed me by the neck area of my black dress, rumpled it, and tried to fight me,” Madonna said. “She shouted at me in front of my clients that she had daughters my age at home. Another court staff, Miss Immaculate Chukwu, also joined in verbally attacking me.”

The altercation left the lawyer with physical injuries, including neck scratches and a broken gold chain.

The NBA Owerri Branch, led by Chairman Chief Chris Ihentuge, immediately condemned the act. In a statement signed by Secretary Daniel Odiba, ACArb, the Branch described the attack as “a reprehensible affront not only to the person of Anosike Olachi Madonna, Esq., but also to the dignity of the legal profession.”

“The Branch will not fold its arms while its members are subjected to intimidation, harassment, or physical assault within the precincts of the court or anywhere else,” the statement read.

A Fact-Finding Committee has been set up to investigate the incident and make recommendations for disciplinary action.

Sources within the court confirmed to bibncollar.com that Miss Immaculate Chukwu had previously been issued a query for chronic lateness and holding onto office keys, leaving magistrates and lawyers locked out of the registry.

Madonna, who vowed to pursue the matter through legal and professional channels, has received widespread support from colleagues. Across NBA forums, lawyers recounted similar experiences of harassment and extortion by court staff.

“This is not an isolated case,” said one female lawyer. “There is a troubling culture of court staff treating legal practitioners—especially young ones—with hostility and disdain.”

Another lawyer recounted: “Last time, one of them tore a lawyer’s dress and drove off with her wig and gown. Nothing was done. Today she’s abroad with her family.”

Others lamented a wider pattern of misconduct: “Go to the registry for the staff to do their jobs, and they begin to dictate what they’ll charge you like it’s private business,” one lawyer said.

The incident has not only reignited calls for institutional reform within the Judiciary but also exposed a growing demand for accountability and dignity for legal practitioners, especially young women.

NBA Owerri says it remains committed to protecting its members and restoring professionalism in the courts.

“This is not just about one lawyer,” one respondent concluded, “It’s about reclaiming the dignity of the legal profession in the face of systemic disrespect and abuse.”

As the Fact-Finding Committee begins work, legal observers are watching closely to see if this moment will mark a turning point—or just another page in a recurring saga.
