A towering blaze erupted Friday night at the 62-storey Marina Pinnacle, also known as Tiger Tower, in Dubai Marina, triggering a massive emergency response and the safe evacuation of 3,820 residents.

The fire broke out around 9:30pm local time on the upper floors of the residential high-rise, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky and forcing residents to flee into the streets. Emergency crews battled the inferno through the night, eventually bringing it under control by early Saturday morning.

In a statement posted to social media, the Dubai Media Office confirmed that all 764 apartments were safely evacuated and that “the smoke currently visible at the site is due to ongoing cooling operations as part of the firefighting process.” The office assured that control measures remain firmly in place and that the situation is fully managed by the firefighting teams.

A resident on the 24th floor recounted the tense moments leading up to the evacuation. “We smelled something burning around 9:45pm,” he told Khaleej Times. “From the balcony, we saw firefighters and people outside. A friend called and said he couldn’t enter because of the fire. Security only told us to leave when we called them.”

He added that thick smoke had filled the stairwells, forcing him and his wife to use the lift, which “thankfully worked.”

Videos shared online captured the chilling scene as flames engulfed the high-rise, casting an orange glow across the Dubai Marina skyline.

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) temporarily suspended metro service between Dubai Marina Station and Palm Jumeirah Station to ensure passenger safety and facilitate emergency operations. An alternative bus service was provided.

Authorities and the building’s developer are reportedly working to provide temporary accommodation for displaced residents.

The cause of the fire remains unknown as investigations continue. This incident follows a previous fire in the same tower in May 2015, which was traced to a kitchen mishap on the 47th floor, according to NDTV.

The Marina Pinnacle fire also comes amid renewed concerns over high-rise fire safety in Dubai and elsewhere, following another recent maritime disaster in the North Sea where a cargo ship carrying sodium cyanide collided with a US oil tanker, resulting in a major fire and the presumed death of one sailor.

While the exact origin of Friday night’s fire has yet to be determined, early footage suggests the flames began on the upper floors of the tower, rapidly spreading and necessitating the large-scale evacuation effort.

No casualties have been reported so far.
