A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Paul Ananaba.

The recently inaugurated Nigerian Bar Association Section on Public Interest and Development Law (NBA-SPIDEL) Electoral Committee has held its inaugural meeting, signaling a renewed commitment to reposition SPIDEL as a vibrant arm of the Nigerian Bar Association.

The committee, which functions as an interim management body, met on 20 May 2025 and resolved to immediately begin the process of revitalizing SPIDEL as the Bar’s operational hub for public interest advocacy and development law.

In a press statement signed and released on Wednesday, 28 May 2025, the Committee conveyed its unanimous acceptance of the assignment and expressed gratitude to the NBA leadership for the opportunity to serve.

Recall that during the NBA’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Ilorin, Kwara State, on 15 May 2025, the former SPIDEL Steering Committee led by Steve Adehi, SAN, was dissolved, and a new committee chaired by Prof. Paul Ananaba, SAN, was constituted.

Other members of the committee include:

  • Kunle Edun, SAN
  • Ibrahim Aliyu Nassarawa
  • Saadatu Mohammed
  • Mojirayo Ogunlana
  • Enome Amatey
  • Okey Ohagba (Secretary)

The committee, in its release, applauded NBA President, Mazi (Sir) Afam Josiah Osigwe, SAN (KSC), for what it described as a bold and timely intervention to resuscitate SPIDEL despite prevailing institutional challenges. The committee also thanked the NBA leadership for the confidence reposed in its members to lead the strategic rebirth of the Section.

As part of its immediate agenda, the committee announced plans to convene a virtual NBA-SPIDEL Stakeholders’ Engagement on Friday, 30 May 2025, at 4:00 PM, aimed at gathering inputs from members and stakeholders in order to shape an inclusive roadmap for the Section. The meeting link will be circulated to stakeholders ahead of the session.

The committee further disclosed that preparations are in top gear to ensure robust participation of SPIDEL at the upcoming NBA Annual General Conference (AGC) scheduled to take place in Enugu. It also revealed that electoral guidelines for the election of SPIDEL Council members during the AGC will be published soon.

Existing members have been encouraged to regularize their membership, while new members are warmly welcomed to join.

Reassuring stakeholders, the committee affirmed its commitment to conducting a free, fair, and credible electoral process and vowed that SPIDEL will remain steadfast in defending the rule of law and public interest.

“We reaffirm that SPIDEL shall not shirk in its responsibility of acting in the best of public interest by challenging government impunity and insensitivity, while ensuring that the rule of law is preserved and promoted for development of our nation at all times,” the statement read.

The committee pledged to collaborate with the NBA President, the NEC, and other statutory organs, while remaining guided by the NBA Constitution and the core objectives of NBA-SPIDEL.
