Officials of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) on Monday sealed off the Wuse Zone 5 office of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) over the non-payment of ground rent spanning 25 years.

Also affected in the sweeping enforcement exercise were a branch of Access Bank and a Total petrol station, both located in Wuse District, Abuja. According to the FCTA, the affected bank building has been operating without ground rent remittance for an astonishing 34 years.

The clampdown follows the administration’s revocation of 4,794 property titles in March this year over prolonged non-payment of ground rents, some of which date back between 10 and 43 years. Property owners with less than 10 years of outstanding rent were issued a 21-day grace period to regularize their payments or face similar sanctions.

FCTA officials disclosed that reconciliation of payment records was ongoing as of last Friday to determine which debtors had complied within the grace window. However, the administration confirmed that enforcement against defaulters with revoked titles would begin in earnest on Monday, as earlier announced.

The Access Bank branch in question occupies a property officially allocated to Rana Tahir Furniture Nigeria Limited. As of press time, it was unclear whether the bank had acquired the property from the original allottee or was operating there under a lease agreement.

The FCTA has reiterated its commitment to enforcing land use regulations and recovering outstanding revenues critical to the capital’s infrastructure and service delivery.
