The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, has called on female lawyers to reject tokenism and assert their rightful place in the legal profession and society.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Nigerian Bar Association Women’s Forum (NBAWF) Annual Conference in Abuja, themed From Promise to Action: Achieving Gender Parity for Lasting Change, Osigwe emphasized the need for deliberate action to bridge the gender gap and catalyze meaningful change.
In his address, Osigwe highlighted the power of women’s voices, stating, “A woman with a voice is a strong woman.” He urged female lawyers not only to possess a voice but to use it boldly to demonstrate strength and contribute to nation-building.
He stressed that settling for token gestures undermines the pursuit of gender parity, saying, “We can lament about the lack of gender parity, but it is only through deliberate action that the gap between men and women in the legal profession will be bridged.”
Osigwe expressed confidence that the NBAWF conference would move beyond rhetoric, fostering engagements that drive tangible progress. “I am confident that the conversations and engagements at this conference will go beyond rhetoric and catalyze real change, ensuring that women assume their rightful place in the legal profession and in society at large,” he said.
The NBAWF Annual Conference, held in Abuja, brought together female lawyers, legal practitioners, and stakeholders to address gender disparities in the legal profession and advocate for systemic change. The theme, From Promise to Action, underscores the urgency of translating commitments into concrete outcomes, particularly in achieving equal representation and opportunities for women in legal practice and leadership.
