The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Nyanya-Karu Branch is embroiled in a deepening leadership crisis, as members passed a vote of no confidence against the Executive Committee led by Augustine Ibolo, Esq. on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, during the Branch’s monthly meeting at the Federal Capital Territory High Court premises in Nyanya, Abuja. The move culminated in the dissolution of Ibolo’s leadership and the appointment of a caretaker committee to steer the Branch toward stability.

The Nyanya-Karu Branch, established on June 9, 2022, by the NBA National Executive Council under then-President Olumide Akpata, has faced persistent challenges since Ibolo’s election as Chairman on June 17, 2023. A petition dated April 1, 2025, signed by concerned members and addressed to NBA President Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, detailed allegations of corruption, financial misappropriation, abuse of office, and violations of the NBA Uniform Bye-Laws for Branches. These grievances have fueled the current crisis, threatening the Branch’s integrity and functionality.
Key allegations against Ibolo include:
- Financial Misconduct:
- Failure to present income and expenditure reports at monthly meetings, violating Section 12(4) of the NBA Uniform Bye-Laws, which mandates such reports by the Treasurer and Financial Secretary.
- Incurring expenditures without approval or ratification by the Branch’s General Meeting, contravening Section 12(5).
- Neglecting to appoint an accountant or firm to audit the Branch’s accounts, as required by Section 12(11).
- Refusal to account for ₦2,000,000 raised for a Young Lawyers Quarters project and ₦3,000,000 collected for an NBA Nyanya-Karu Cooperative launched in April 2024.
- Misappropriation of funds from the Branch’s Law Week, with Ibolo allegedly assuming sole control and failing to provide financial accountability.
- Electoral Manipulation:
- Unilaterally establishing an Electoral Committee without General Meeting approval, violating Section 9 of the Bye-Laws.
- Appointing Kennedy Okara Bello, an individual allegedly not a registered Branch member, as Electoral Committee Chairman.
- Monetizing nomination forms (e.g., ₦100,000 for Chairman, ₦50,000 for Secretary), in breach of Section 16(5), which stipulates that ballot papers be funded by the Branch, not candidates.
- Imposing a compulsory zoning formula for electable positions without Branch approval, undermining democratic processes.
- Abuse of Office and Suppression of Dissent:
- Censoring members’ opinions on the Branch’s WhatsApp platform and at physical meetings, with threats of disciplinary action against dissenting voices.
- Manipulating meeting minutes to favor his administration, ignoring objections from members.
- Disregarding constitutional provisions, such as Order 11 and 12 of the First Schedule, which outline procedures for motions and resolutions.
Frustrated by Ibolo’s alleged high-handedness and refusal to address concerns, members moved a motion during the April 2025 meeting to dissolve the Ibolo-led Executive Committee. The motion was unanimously adopted, leading to the immediate appointment of a caretaker committee to manage the Branch’s affairs and ensure a credible election in June 2025. Elder Morris Osakwe was elected as Interim Caretaker Committee Chairman, with Mr. Raymond Asika appointed as Secretary.
The crisis escalated when Ibolo reportedly walked out of the meeting after members protested the adoption of altered minutes that omitted critical discussions. His departure prompted the swift vote of no confidence, reflecting widespread dissatisfaction with his leadership.

The Nyanya-Karu Branch has faced leadership disputes since its inception. In 2022, the Branch split into two factions led by Ibolo and Ichie Magnus Onwukwe, each claiming legitimacy. A reconciliatory effort by Mazi Afam Osigwe in November 2022 temporarily resolved the conflict, leading to the appointment of a caretaker committee under Steve Emelieze to conduct the 2023 election. However, Ibolo’s tenure has reignited tensions, with members accusing him of perpetuating the same divisive tactics.
Previous allegations of financial misappropriation surfaced in 2021, when 44 members petitioned the NBA President for a caretaker committee to address Ibolo’s conduct. These recurring issues underscore a pattern of governance challenges within the Branch.
The petition urged NBA President Mazi Afam Osigwe to:
- Appoint a neutral caretaker committee to oversee a free, fair, and transparent election.
- Alternatively, constitute a neutral electoral committee to manage the election process.
- Conduct an independent audit of the Branch’s finances to ensure accountability.
With the Branch’s elections approaching, members fear that Ibolo’s actions, including the appointment of non-members to the Electoral Committee and the monetization of nominations, could undermine the process’s credibility. The crisis has led to an exodus of members, who cite intimidation and victimization as reasons for disengaging from Branch activities.
