The Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal will on Wednesday deliver its judgment on the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Asue Ighodalo, challenging the outcome of the September 21, 2024 governorship election in the state.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the election, securing 291,667 votes against Ighodalo’s 247,655 votes.
However, the PDP and Ighodalo are contesting the results, alleging that the election was marred by irregularities and that INEC’s declaration of Okpebholo as the winner was invalid due to non-compliance with the Electoral Act, 2022.
The three-member tribunal, chaired by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, had reserved judgment on March 3 after all parties adopted their final written addresses.
During the proceedings, the tribunal admitted 148 Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines used in the election as evidence. These electronic devices were tendered by Anthony Itodo, a Senior Technical Officer in INEC’s ICT Department, following a subpoena from the petitioners.
The PDP and Ighodalo argued that the BVAS records from 133 polling units proved irregularities and demanded the nullification of Okpebholo’s victory.
On the other hand, APC and Okpebholo urged the tribunal to dismiss the petitions, describing them as baseless. They argued that the petitioners failed to provide substantial evidence to support their claims of irregularities.
The tribunal will deliver its judgment on three petitions marked EPT/ED/GOV/01/2024, EPT/ED/GOV/02/2024, and EPT/ED/GOV/03/2024.
