The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), representing the eight branches in Rivers State, has strongly condemned the recent resolution passed by the Rivers State House of Assembly, which directed the Department of State Security (DSS) to investigate the Chief Judge of Rivers State, citing allegations of age falsification. The NBA has expressed concerns over the potential impact this may have on the judiciary, urging all parties involved to adhere to democratic processes and constitutional guidelines.

The NBA’s statement emphasizes the need for the three arms of government in the state – the Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary – to work together harmoniously for the peace, progress, and stability of Rivers State. The association also cautioned against drawing the judiciary into the ongoing political dispute between the executive and legislative branches of government.
“We recognize the constitutional powers of the state’s government branches but must stress that the independence of the judiciary is critical for maintaining peace and stability. The judiciary is the last resort for resolving disputes, as witnessed in the Supreme Court’s recent rulings,” said Tam Noi A. Roberts, Chairman of the NBA MBCrea Branch.
The NBA also reminded the public that any complaints against judicial officers should be addressed by the National Judicial Council (NJC), which has the sole authority to conduct investigations or take disciplinary actions. Security agencies, it said, must respect the rule of law and due process, working within their defined roles.
“Judicial independence should not be compromised by political pressure, blackmail, or intimidation. The judiciary remains the last hope of the common man and must be protected from undue interference,” the statement added.
The association further appealed for peace and dialogue, urging all parties involved to seek resolution through democratic means and respect the rule of law. The NBA also highlighted the importance of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, which could play a crucial role in easing tensions.
In conclusion, the NBA called for the protection of the judiciary’s integrity and the prevention of any actions that could destabilize Rivers State and the nation’s broader democratic processes.
