The sudden adjournment follows a letter from Governor Siminalayi Fubara, notifying the Assembly of his intention to present the 2025 Appropriation Bill on March 19. However, instead of scheduling the budget presentation, the Martin Amaewhule-led Assembly, which remains loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike, opted for an indefinite adjournment.
The move has sparked intense speculation, with many seeing it as a deliberate attempt to frustrate the governor’s administration and deepen the ongoing power struggle between the executive and legislative arms of government.
This development comes after Governor Fubara’s failed budget presentation on March 12, when he and his entourage were locked out of the Assembly Quarters, despite following due process. In response, the governor, in a letter dated March 13, 2025, reaffirmed his intent to re-present the budget in line with the Supreme Court judgment and at the lawmakers’ own request.
With the Assembly now suspended indefinitely, uncertainty looms over the fate of the state’s budget, further escalating the political standoff between the governor and the legislature.
