The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) of the Supreme Court of Nigeria has announced the restoration of Chief Uche C. Ihediwa to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).

The decision, effective from February 6, 2025, follows a review of the circumstances that led to his earlier suspension.

Chief Ihediwa was suspended from using the SAN title on July 1, 2024, following a petition received by the LPPC. After thorough consideration of all relevant facts during its meeting on February 6, 2025, the Committee resolved to reinstate him to the prestigious rank.

In a press release dated February 12, 2025, the LPPC Secretary, Hajo Sarki Bello, Esq., stated:

“Pursuant to the Committee’s decision, Chief Uche C. Ihediwa is hereby restored to the Rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria with effect from the 6th of February, 2025. The general public is hereby informed of this decision.”

The restoration of Chief Ihediwa’s SAN title marks the conclusion of the disciplinary process initiated by the LPPC, underscoring the Committee’s commitment to fairness and due process in addressing matters concerning legal practitioners.

The LPPC, which oversees the conferment and regulation of the SAN title, has not disclosed further details regarding the petition or the reasons for the suspension and subsequent reinstatement.

Former president of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Yakubu Maikyau,SAN, had petitioned the then Chief Justice of Nigeria and Chairman of the LPPC, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, alleging that Ihediwa had conducted himself in a manner unbecoming of the holder of the rank of a SAN.

The NBA President alleged that Ihediwa had during the International Bar Association conference in Paris in 2023, stated that there was corruption in appointment of judges in Abia State, when he served as the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of the state.
