The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Akure has led to the passage of several critical resolutions aimed at upholding professional ethics, discipline, and legal reforms.

The NBA-NEC has mandated that the only acceptable dress code for NEC meetings shall be a dark suit and tie. Additionally, all NBA branches must establish committees to enforce adherence to this dress code among members. Lawyers found in violation of proper dressing in court will be walked out, and only properly dressed members will be recognized at NEC meetings going forward.
The NBA has taken a firm stance against forum shopping, division shopping, and judge shopping, stating that such practices will not be tolerated. Any lawyer found guilty of engaging in these unethical practices will be referred to the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC). Lawyers are encouraged to report such cases to the NBA and escalate them to the LPDC.
To enhance professional discipline, the NBA-NEC has resolved to establish virtual disciplinary panels across different regions, with separate panels designated for Lagos and Abuja. These panels will handle cases of professional misconduct efficiently.
The NBA President has ordered a full-scale investigation into the tragic accident and death of the Pioneer Chairman of the NBA Eti-Osa Branch. The 2nd Vice President, the Acting Chair of the branch, and the Chairman of the Lagos Branch will oversee the inquiry, with a commitment to ensuring that anyone found culpable is prosecuted.
The NBA will establish a special committee to monitor the dressing of lawyers across all branches. Lawyers who fail to comply with the dress code will face disciplinary actions, including being prevented from appearing in court.
Acknowledging the efforts of FIDA and the NBA Women Forum in addressing gender-based violence, the NEC emphasized that male lawyers must also actively participate in combating the menace.
With these resolutions, the NBA-NEC reinforces its commitment to professionalism, ethical conduct, and justice. Further updates from the meeting are expected in the coming days.
