The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has made substantial progress in its fight against gender-based violence and unlawful detention during its recently concluded 16-day human rights activism campaign.

Sabastine Anyia Esq, the 1st Vice President of the NBA and Chairman of the Human Rights Institute, revealed the impressive achievements during his welcome address at the commemoration of Global Human Rights Day on December 10, 2024, at the NBA National Secretariat Auditorium in Abuja.
According to Anyia, the NBA’s concerted efforts across all 130 branches nationwide resulted in the resolution of over 250 cases of gender-based violence. This remarkable feat underscores the association’s commitment to protecting the rights of women and children, who are often the most vulnerable members of society.
In addition to tackling gender-based violence, the NBA also secured the release of 109 suspects from police stations across the country. Furthermore, with the cooperation of the Chief Judges of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, the association facilitated the release of 89 inmates from correctional centers. Anyia noted that the stories of some of these suspects and inmates were particularly distressing, emphasizing the importance of the NBA’s intervention in safeguarding their rights.
The 16-day activism campaign, which ran from November 25 to December 10, 2024, marked the first time in the NBA’s history that all branches participated in such a widespread awareness campaign. Anyia praised the NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, for his proactive leadership and innovative approach, which brought joy and excitement to many families across the country. He also commended the vice chairmen of all NBA branches for their understanding, support, commitment, and active participation in the campaign.
To encourage maximum participation and recognize outstanding contributions, the NBA introduced awards for the branches with the highest number of released inmates and freed suspects. Anyia emphasized that competition often brings out the best in individuals and groups, and the winners of these awards were set to be honored during the Global Human Rights Day celebration.
