The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) addressed a range of critical issues during its recent National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, demonstrating its commitment to upholding the rule of law, protecting human rights, and ensuring good governance in Nigeria.
Stamp Production Delays and Resolution
In response to delays in producing and distributing lawyer stamps, the NBA convened an emergency meeting on September 9, 2024, bringing together the NBA National EXCO, 130 branch Chairmen, and Secretaries. The NBA has renegotiated a new agreement with stamp producers and directed branches to compile a list of members with stamp delivery issues for immediate attention.
NBA Defends Peaceful Protesters’ Rights
The NBA has launched pro bono support for #EndBadGovernance protesters facing trial, standing against intimidation and ensuring due process and justice prevail. All branches will monitor these trials to protect the rights of peaceful protesters.
Justice for Minors: NBA Condemns Detention and Abuse
The NBA has strongly condemned the detention and abuse of 32 minors following the #EndBadGovernance protests. The association demands immediate reform of the juvenile detention system, emphasizing that every child deserves fair treatment and protection.
Pushing for LPDC Rule Reforms and Ethical Standards
NBA President Mazi Afam Josiah Osigwe, SAN, has sent a memo to the Body of Benchers advocating for prompt investigation timelines and the restoration of the NBA’s investigatory powers in professional misconduct cases. The NBA will also rigorously enforce Rule 12(1), requiring practicing certificates only for lawyers who meet BPF and CPD standards.
Addressing the Closure of Court of Appeal Divisions
The NBA has called on the Governors of the south-eastern states to ensure the security of judicial officers and the functioning of the Enugu, Owerri, and Awka Divisions of the Court of Appeal, which have been temporarily closed due to security concerns.
The NBA remains committed to driving government accountability, ensuring policies align with citizens’ calls for justice, human rights, transparency, and good governance. The association also looks forward to its upcoming Annual General Conference in Rivers State in August 2025, with a 20% fee reduction for young lawyers to promote inclusivity and accessibility.
