Mazi Afam Josiah Osigwe, SAN, the newly sworn-in President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has announced the establishment of a Justice Sector Reform Committee to spearhead the Association’s advocacy for comprehensive reforms in the judicial sector.

During his inaugural speech, Osigwe acknowledged the urgent need for reforms in the justice system, particularly in light of the recent communiqué issued at the Justice Sector Reform Conference convened by the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN.

The Justice Sector Reform Committee will not only advocate for necessary reforms but also push for appropriate investments in modernizing court infrastructures. This includes the construction and renovation of selected court facilities to provide conducive environments for the speedy dispensation of justice.

Additionally, the Committee will propose amendments to existing legislation and rules of courts to enhance the effectiveness of justice delivery. The reforms will encompass areas such as case management and scheduling, notification of adjournments to lawyers, enforcement of the use of NBA Legal Mail addresses in filing processes, and the implementation of customized email addresses for all court registries to strengthen the e-filing regime being introduced in various courts.

Osigwe emphasized the importance of supporting continuous education and training programs for judges, lawyers, and court staff to keep them abreast of evolving legal developments, including the deployment of technology and global best practices in the field of law. The Committee will collaborate with academic and research institutions, as well as professional organizations, to develop specialized training modules on judicial ethics, case management, and legal research skills.

The Justice Sector Reform Committee will be chaired by Prof. Joy Ezeilo, SAN, with Sunusi Musa, SAN, serving as the Alternate Chair, and Terfa Raphael Agbanyi as the Secretary.

By establishing this Committee, the NBA President seeks to drive positive change in the justice sector, promote the rule of law, and ensure that the legal system effectively serves the needs of all Nigerians, regardless of their background or status.
